Ruben Amorim was seriously considered as a potential successor to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, The Times reports.

The Portuguese coach, who was then working at Sporting Lisbon, came out on top for most of the metrics the Merseyside club looked at for the appointment.

However, they ultimately decided against going for Amorim after estimating that it would take them around £400m to rebuild their squad.

Liverpool are now on course to become Premier League champions with Arne Slot in charge and minimal changes to the squad.

Amorim, meanwhile, moved to England a few months later to take over at Man United. After a rocky few months, the club is set for a full-scale rebuild in the summer.
