Arne Slot: ‘At 2-2, I would have loved to bring in Diogo Jota, but I could not for terrible reasons’
Arne slot
“It was a great game to watch,” Arne Slot said after Liverpool’s 4-2 win over Bournemouth.
“This is what makes football so great, all three parties involved wanted a good game: us, Bournemouth and the referee. High tempo, no stoppages or time wasting. Well done to them, they went 2-0 down and kept on fighting, and so did we when they came back.
“In every running stat they were very high last season, and you could see again how fit this team was and they never gave up.
“For the goals, our rest defence was in place, but the pace they had and the tempo they kept up, they got past, but they faced that too. Bournemouth faced a team that never gave up. We lost many players during the summer, but we did not lose our mentality.”
He added: “Normally, at 2-2, everyone knows which player I look to at that moment in time. I would have loved to bring in Diogo Jota, but I could not for terrible reasons. But tonight the fans and the players did what he did for us many times in the past.”

Maresca: Fofana played 45 minutes at centre-back – one of the worst halves since we started. Badiashile? Conference League final, we were losing with him in the middle
Enzo Maresca / Chelsea FC
Enzo Maresca has reiterated that Chelsea will struggle in Levi Colwill’s absence due to his specific role in the build-up — unless the club signs a new centre-back.
“It’s different because the one in the middle is in the middle for a reason,” he told a press conference.

“He is the one who recognises solutions, he is the one who most of the time has to break lines. It’s not the same playing in the middle as playing on the left side.
“Then there are players who can do both. Levi, when Tosin [Adarabioyo] was playing in the middle, was on the left.
“But most of the time Levi was in the middle, and then we have Trev [Chalobah] or Cucu [Marc Cucurella], or Reece [James] or Cucu. They have different solutions. But the one in the middle in my way [of playing] is so, so, so important.
“He [Wesley Fofana] can do, he can do. He needs to be fit, first of all, and then he can do it.
“He played 45 minutes in that position and it was the first half against Bournemouth away, if you remember. Probably one of the worst halves since we started.
“And Benoit [Badiashile] playing in the middle, Conference League final, first half. We were losing 1-0. Then we changed with Levi and we won 4-1. So it’s not the same.”
The club’s stance so far has been that there are no immediate plans to sign a new centre-back. However, Maresca appears to be pushing in the opposite direction.
