Liverpool have cashed in after topping the league in the Champions League

English clubs have guaranteed a share of a £280m Champions League prize pot, with Liverpool claiming the most.

The league stage for the newly revamped format of the competition came to an end on Wednesday evening, with all four of the Premier League sides finding out their fate. Despite falling to defeat to PSV Eindhoven, Liverpool still topped the table and sealed an automatic spot in the last 16.

They have been joined in the next stage by Arsenal and Aston Villa. The Gunners finished third and just two points behind the Reds with their win in Girona.

Meanwhile, Villa secured the last automatic qualification spot ahead of Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich after their dramatic win against Celtic. Manchester City just about got over the line as they saw off Club Brugge and will now go into the playoffs.

And with the dust now settled on the first ever Champions League league stage, each club’s prize money has been announced. After finishing as league winners, Liverpool have sealed the highest amount of £82.7m.

That includes a standard starting fee of £15.5m, while they also bagged £9.2m for reaching the knockout rounds. Liverpool were paid a further £26.5m due to their market pool and five-year coefficient, while their ten-year UEFA coefficient has seen them seal a further £8.7m.

The points that they have collected this term are worth £12.3m, while Arne Slot ’s side secured £10.4m for winning the entire league stage. Arsenal in the meantime have bagged £74.4m following their performance.

That includes the starting and knockout funds of £15.5m and £9.2m. Their coefficient fees are considerably lower than Liverpool’s, sitting at £21m and £7.7m respectively. Their points were worth around £11.1m, with the Gunners’ placement bonus sitting at just over £10m.

Strangely, it’s then Manchester City as the next English club to earn the most despite having not yet sealed a place in the next round. Pep Guardiola’s side secured £15.5m for taking part, while they only received around £830k for sealing a playoff spot.

Their placement in the league is also only worth £3.6m. City have also only bagged £6.4m for the amount of points they have accrued. But their historical performance in the Champions League has seen their prize pot swell with payments of £27.3m and £9.5m seeing them bag a total of £63.3m.

Finally, while Aston Villa have been paid the lowest amount of all of the English clubs, they’ve have still added £59.4m to their coffers. That includes the standard payments for qualification, as well as their performance in the competition this year worth £27.3m.

It’s their UEFA coefficient that has let them down, with that worth around £16.5m for their five and ten year coefficients combined.
