VAR pulled from Liverpool vs. Arsenal at last minute after huge error
The PGMOL have pulled VAR official Michael Salisbury from duty in Liverpool vs. Arsenal on Sunday after a glaring error in Fulham‘s 2-0 loss at Chelsea.
Salisbury was at the heart of a costly decision during Chelsea vs. Fulham on Saturday, wrongly intervening to deny the visitors an early goal.
The VAR prompted referee Rob Jones to review an incident in the buildup to Josh King’s opener, in which Rodrigo Muniz was adjudged to have fouled Trevoh Chalobah.
Muniz stepped on Chalobah’s foot while winning the ball in the middle of the pitch, and Jones’ failure to spot the situation was deemed a clear-and-obvious error by Salisbury.
It caused uproar not only in Craven Cottage as Marco Silva’s side went on to lose 2-0, but around the Premier League after another bizarre decision on only the third weekend of the new season.
The PGMOL have been proactive in acknowledging Salisbury’s error, removing him from VAR duty in Liverpool vs. Arsenal hours before kickoff.
John Brooks will instead be lead VAR, prompting a reshuffle elsewhere with new officials in place for Aston Villa vs. Crystal Palace later on Sunday.
This Is Anfield understands referees’ chief Howard Webb has already been in contact with Fulham after Salisbury’s call was deemed not in line with principle of ‘referee’s call’ and the PGMOL’s high bar for intervention.
Chris Kavanagh is referee for Sunday’s 4.30pm kickoff with Dan Cook and Wade Smith his assistants and Sam Barrott fourth official.
Sian Massey-Ellis will remain in her role as assistant VAR supporting Brooks.
It remains to be seen if Jones, who overturned King’s goal at Stamford Bridge following Salisbury’s intervention, will be considered for duty in the next round of fixtures after the September international
