Thierry Henry calls it a ‘disgrace’ that one Liverpool player never won the Ballon d’Or during his career

‘For me, he will be regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time’

Thierry Henry has called it a “disgrace” that “one of the greatest midfielders of all time,” Steven Gerrard, missed out on winning the Ballon d’Or in 2005.

That year, Barcelona and Brazil star Ronaldinho won the prestigious award, then known as the European Footballer of the Year, after an outstanding season with both club and country.

He helped Barcelona secure the La Liga title and played a key role in Brazil’s World Cup qualification, making him the third Brazilian to win the Ballon d’Or with 225 points.

However, the result surprised former Arsenal striker Henry, who believes Gerrard deserved the 2005 Ballon d’Or after leading Liverpool to a dramatic Champions League victory.

Henry said: “It was a disgrace he didn’t win European Footballer of the Year after Istanbul in 2005. For me, he will be regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time.”

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard finished second in the standings with 148 points, followed by Steven Gerrard with 142 points. Thierry Henry earned 41 points, while Andriy Shevchenko rounded out the top five with 33 points.
