Strange things happen in Hamburg all the time. On the second weekend in January, Germany’s highest level of competitive team chess found itself under an unusual spotlight.
Tickets were oversubscribed. Journalists scrambled for accreditation.
Carlsen — the most famous current chess player in the world and the game’s number one — made his debut for St. Pauli’s chess team.
St Pauli’s football team are its most famous side and won promotion to the Bundesliga last season. St Pauli’s amateur chess team, their own department within the broader club, are also new to their sport’s highest level, having also won promotion in 2024.
Carlsen is part of their fight to stave off relegation and his first appearance got them their first win of the season.
To loan or not to loan? That is the question surrounding Evan Ferguson.
Head coach Fabian Hurzeler has left the door ajar for the Brighton & Hove Albion forward to make a temporary move to a Premier League rival during the January transfer window.
The club have a history of loaning out young players they rate highly to aid their development. The ideal destination is one with a similar style to Hurzeler: playing through the pitch, with intensity out of possession. Also a club not fighting for the same thing; Brighton want to qualify for Europe again after finishing sixth under De Zerbi in 2022-23.
The congested nature of the top half of the Premier League table narrows the field appreciably. West Ham would certainly be interested in signing Ferguson.

Trevoh Chalobah ended the summer in Chelsea’s ‘bomb squad’ and was sent on loan to Crystal Palace.
He returns five months later, with assurances that he has a role to play with Enzo Maresca’s first team. It is another, unexpected, chapter in a rollercoaster professional career at Stamford Bridge after the club exercised a January recall clause in his season-long loan on Wednesday.
In 12 league appearances for Palace, Chalobah has gained fresh momentum in his career but Chelsea’s assessment of his role at the club has changed little from the summer.
With injuries in their defence, what has changed are their circumstances.
Liam Twomey has all the lates on Chalobah’s recall and what it means for both club and player.
New Aston Villa signing Donyell Malen was watching their 1-0 win over Everton last night at Goodison Park.
In front of him sat Yasin Ozcan, the 18-year-old defender who will soon join Villa from Turkish club Kasimpasa in a deal worth €7million (£5.9m/$7.2m) and is seen as a “project player”.
